Nesting Boxes

Nesting season is a wonderful time for a backyard birder. We know nesting is upon us when we see signs of courtship begin to occur. During this time birds will begin showing off and dishing out their best pick-up lines. From singing and head bobbing to acrobatic flights and other bizarre movements, males will do almost anything to win over their female love interest. The male house wrens will actually build several trial nests in mounted nesting boxes for a female’s inspection. Two or three basic sizes of birdhouse will be appropriate for most backyard cavity nesters. The entrance hole diameter is the most important consideration. Large birds like screech owls will fit through entrance holes that are three inches whereas tiny wrens can squeeze through a narrow slit approximately 7/8”.
