The differences between a roosting box and a nesting box are plenty. While the nesting box is usually just an empty space with an entrance hole on top, the roosting box has shelves on the inside and its entrance hole is at the bottom to preserve as much heat as possible--since heat rises, having a hole at the top would just lose all that warmth and while this is OK for summer months, during the winter birds needs as much warmth as can be provided to them.
